With the support of the Healthcare Foundation Of Wilson SPOT kids are learning how much work it takes for fruits and vegetables to reach the dinner table. They are also learning that there is more than one way to grow plants.
The traditional way of planting is in soil, but there is another way called “Hydroponics” which uses no soil at all. The plants use water (with nutrients) the survive which requires a bit more science to be successful.
The planting started from seed on April 24th. Spot Students Kayla Howell and Yahary Quiroz take care of the garden while calling upon other SPOT Members to assist with various tasks. It takes teamwork to be successful, and so far the kids are doing a great job!
The soil planting and maintenance has been handled by SPOT staff. Hopefully in the near future SPOT kids will invited to participate.
The SPOT Gifted Program boldly went where few have gone before. Over top the SPOT Building in an airplane! The Young Eagles program from the EAA an aviation enthusiast group invited The SPOT to the Wilson Aviation Industrial Center for a tour and ride up in the skies. The kids were given the opportunity to take the controls for a few moments to see what flying an airplane is really like.
Part of the adventure was flying over the SPOT Building to get a different perspective at what it looks like, and check for leaks in the roof. The kids also received a Flight Log Book which contains a code for FREE REAL ground training at Sporty’s Online. The training will be used with the GLP Flight Simulator for those who show real interest. THANK YOU to Don Boyette and his team for creating an outstanding experience for our kids!
